Driver dead after wheel collides with multiple vehicles on the QEW in Oakville
Published January 10, 2019:
After a recent collision with multiple vehicles at the Queen Elizabeth Way West (QEW), a driver has died.
Const. Tony Vella said the collision happened just before 3 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 15) on the west side of the QEW, near the Oakville Road overpass.
Vella said the collision involved the passenger side of a white Dodge Charger being struck by a second, smaller white Dodge Charger and a black SUV travelling westbound on the overpass, which was travelling eastbound with a large semi tractor-trailer, with some of the load still in the bed.
Vella said a second collision occurred when a van heading northbound collided with the back of a truck travelling eastbound.
He said the driver of the Dodge Charger involved in the first collision was taken to hospital with serious injuries, including a broken hip. He was then taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, including a liver puncture.
Vella said his fellow officers were also injured, and paramedics were called to the scene. He said the injuries were from collisions with their patrol vehicles at a scene where the victims were ejected.
A man in his 20s was charged with impaired driving and also driving without a licence, and possession of a controlled substance, Vella said.
Another man, also in his 20s, was charged with possession of a controlled substance.
Vella said the collision occurred while the police were making a traffic stop just after 3 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 15).
He said it was the first such collision he had seen at the QEW.
He said the collision happened within minutes of the accident that killed a man on the eastbound side of the QEW, west of the Oakville Road overpass.
According to Vella, police have been to the scene of dozens of collisions at the QEW over the past number of years.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Queen’s Park Mayor Jim Watson offered condolences to the man who lost his life and to the victims and their families who have been left
