Governor Newsom Declares First-ever Emergency Declaration to Address Wildfire Recovery in California

Newsom signs state of emergency to support California communities recovering from wildfires

San Francisco, CA – Today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order to create the first-ever emergency declaration to address disaster recovery in California’s wake of the devastation caused by wildfires this past week. The declaration will support the state’s recovery efforts in the following areas:

Recovery from wildfires through state assistance

Allocation of critical resources

Reduces the state deficit

Improves public health & safety

Improves access to vital resources

Develops a coordinated response

The order outlines the following emergency declaration:

Declaration of an emergency on the ground of California to allocate public and private resources and establish effective coordination to address the wildfire disaster in areas of the state affected by the fires

Redeployed public health, housing, and other services and resources for support of wildfire recovery efforts

Allocated to state agencies and private actors those necessary resources and services that can be effectively utilized for wildfire recovery efforts in areas of the state affected by the fires

Allocated to the state budget all costs associated with this emergency declaration, including costs of personnel, supplies, equipment, facilities, and administrative costs

Governor Newsom declared this emergency based on the severity of the wildfires in California and to provide the resources necessary to address the impact of the fires in areas affected by them, as well as on the state’s ability to address state and local economic and social needs in the aftermath of the fires. This declaration will provide the means by which the State of California will be able to quickly and fully implement and carry out the following provisions:
