WTA Tour set to return to China in 2023 following suspension over Peng Shuai situation
A WTA Tour spokesman said Friday that the WTA was in discussions with several other countries to host the WTA Tour in the next two years, but that no decisions had been taken yet.
“There is no decision at the moment,” the spokesman said. “As far as China’s involvement is concerned, it will be decided in the next couple of weeks, but it is not imminent.”
Shanghai, the hometown of the three women and the men who were suspended last month, are seen as a candidate because of the potential of hosting Grand Slam events.
Earlier this week, a WTA Tour official confirmed that the Chinese Tennis Association (CTA) will be hosting eight Grand Slam events in the year 2023.
“When is it? We still don’t know when, but we are working on it,” said the official. “We are not planning something at this moment.”
The official could not offer any details about the format of the Grand Slam events.
However, the official said that “we hope to be able to announce it (announcement of Grand Slam events in 2023) next week.”
A number of WTA Tour events were also expected to be held in China this year and the last two years, including last Tuesday’s WTA Finals in Changzhou and the WTA Super Slam in Guangzhou.
